Caricatures!?

For fun I'm taking Jason Seiler's "Art of Caricature" class at Schoolism, which is teaching me how to do finished digital paintings like this one. This is kind of different for me, and it feels great to stretch into new territory. Schoolism is an online program with classes on painting, character design, comics, and more. The teachers are top notch so it's awesome if you aren't close to a good bricks and mortar school! (Or even if you are.) If I do any more paintings I'm not embarrassed of, I'll post them here...

nice! i've been thinking about taking some classes at Schoolism as well. Sailer also has great dvds there on sketching out there. It was all my budget allowed me to check out so far :) good luck with the course man

Thanks Aaron! Greg, Seiler is an excellent draftsman so I'm sure those dvds are good. In Schoolism you can either do a "self-taught" class where you see the lectures and do the assignments on your own, or you can do the full class where the teacher gives you feedback. I went with the full class and it's been great because Jason is really pushing me to improve. It's twice as expensive as the self taught class however, so I'll probably wait and save up a little before enrolling in another one.

Really really nice! I just finished the course myself, Jason is a great teacher. Very impressed by your drawing skills. Looking forward to see the rest of the assignments :)

That's awesome Mark! You never cease to wow me! Really nice details.

Magnus, you're in Viborg? Why haven't I seen you out here in Thailand with the other Danish vagabond who visit us so often? ...I envy your dramatic name, btw.

Lee, thanks!

Yes I'm in Denamrk. I was planning to apply for thailand for my internship, but unfortunately I didn't, which is probably one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made. Sounded like Tobias, Henrik, Thomas and the rest of the guys had a great time. I've asked Tod if he would let me know if there would be possible to come for a visit some time, and maybe work a bit. Let's see what the future brings. btw, what's dramatic about my name? :)

Mark Oftedal said...

You're kidding that you don't know what's dramatic about your name, right?? Oh I don't know... just that "magnus" sounds like it's Latin for "badass".

Yeah, we had an awesome time with those fellas. If you do have a chance to make it out that'd be great!

Awesome job, when I saw the critique you just blew mi mind with such a perfect work. Your texture on the skin, lips, eyes, hair and values are perfect, I'm so impressed with your skills. Did you record yourself painting this one? I wish I could see you working on this one. Did you create a brush to paint her skin texture or did you use Jason's magic 24?

Thank you, you are a sensei man.

Jairo, you're a fellow student! I don't know how you found me... I haven't seen a way to contact any of our classmates.

I didn't record myself painting it, no. And before you praise me on this painting you should see the Lesson 5 assignment I just turned in. Painting in color was traumatic; it's unfinished and looks really bad. I guess that's why we're in school though, eh?

Oh yeah, I used Jason's 24 brush for this. I don't have any other interesting brushes...

Hi Mark, well, I made a search on google images for "schoolism.com" and there it was, your amazing Assignment for Module 4, that's how I found who did the piece. I really don't know anymore if the critiques are from old students because they don't have the dates anymore since the website update, but I've seen more people since 2008 asking for the possibility of interaction with other classmates, and it seems is not on their plans.

I haven't seen the critique of your assognment 5, what number is it on the list of critiques?

I'm following your blog now, so I guess you can contact me now, if not, my gmail is jairobenavides

Jairo, I don't think Jason has critiqued my lesson 5 yet. When he does you'll see that it's a mess.

Odd that it's kind of hard to even see who your classmates are, isn't it? The site has a few things that could be better like that, but overall I like it.

Yes, I love the classes, and definitively the way to go is with the critiques, I had to wait a little bit to have all the money, but it's worth.
